Timber cottage sauna house in Ismayilli with a dark shingle roof and large windows

A sauna house with a lounge is a separate building in your garden that holds far more than a hot room: a place to relax, a shower and WC, and — if you want — a steam room, hammam, massage room and a hot tub or pool. At Barrel Sauna we call this format the cottage sauna. It is built for 4–20 people and costs roughly 10,000–50,000 AZN. Below we cover which rooms you can combine, how to size it and how the design is prepared.

How a sauna house differs from a standard sauna

A barrel or cube sauna is a single hot room: you go in, warm up, and step out into the garden to cool down. A sauna house is a complete space. Guests change there, sit in the lounge with tea between rounds, shower, and maybe book a massage. Everything happens under one roof, whatever the weather.

From the outside a cottage sauna looks like a small house — straight walls, a pitched roof, big windows. That makes the interior easy to plan and lets the building sit naturally next to a villa.

Which rooms can a sauna house include?

The real strength of the cottage format is that you choose the rooms. Options include:

  • Sauna room — a classic Finnish sauna with dry heat.
  • Steam room — softer, more humid heat.
  • Salt room — a calm space lined with Himalayan salt panels.
  • Turkish hammam — warm marble and a foam-massage ritual.
  • Venik room — a separate hot room for traditional whisking with birch or oak bundles.
  • Massage room — for unwinding after a session.
  • Hot or cold tub, or a pool — for contrast bathing.
  • Bathroom / WC — shower and toilet.
  • Lounge — sofa, table, tea corner, TV: the living room of the whole sauna house.

You don’t need everything. For most families “sauna + shower/WC + lounge” is plenty; other rooms are added according to budget and how you plan to use the house.

Typical combinations

Scenario Rooms Best for
Family sauna house Sauna, shower/WC, lounge Family of 4–6, weekend use
Contrast version Sauna, cold plunge tub, shower/WC, lounge People who love hot–cold cycles
Bathhouse Sauna, hammam or steam room, venik room, lounge Fans of a traditional bathhouse
Full wellness Sauna, steam, salt room, massage, pool, WC, lounge Large families, guests, villas and hotels

Treat the table as a starting point — every project is adapted to the plot and your habits.

How many people should it hold?

A cottage sauna can be built for 4 to 20 people. To size it, answer four questions:

  1. How many people will sit in the sauna at the same time? This sets the size of the hot room and the heater output.
  2. How many people should fit in the lounge? If you entertain, the lounge should be larger than the sauna.
  3. How many showers and toilets do you need? For big groups, two showers make a real difference.
  4. What might you add later? If a tub or pool comes later, reserve the space now.

What drives the price

A cottage sauna costs roughly 10,000–50,000 AZN. The range is wide because two sauna houses can be completely different projects. The main factors are:

  • total floor area and number of rooms;
  • wet zones such as a hammam, steam room or pool, which need extra waterproofing and engineering;
  • interior timber: standard linden, or cedar, abachi or teak;
  • heater type and output (Harvia, SAWO, Teplodar, TMF, Fanlan);
  • roofing, windows, lighting and décor (salt panels, decorative stone, log-cut décor, LED).

How a sauna house is built

The cottage uses the same build system as Barrel Sauna’s other outdoor models:

  • Exterior cladding — water-resistant, thermo-treated larch (listvenica), known locally as “ship timber”.
  • Multilayer walls — mineral stone wool plus a special membrane that keeps moisture and steam away from the timber frame.
  • Interior — linden by default; cedar, abachi, African abachi or teak on request.
  • Roof — ondulin or profiled metal sheet options.

Insulation and ventilation between wet zones (shower, hammam, pool) and hot rooms matter a lot, and we solve them at the design stage. Foundation, water supply, drainage and electrics are planned at the same stage.

3D design: see it before it’s built

In a large sauna house, a planning mistake is expensive — a cramped corridor, a badly placed door, steam drifting into the lounge. That’s why we start with a 3D design. You see the room layout, windows, interior and dimensions before any work begins, and changes are made on screen rather than on finished walls.

The Ismayilli project

Our cottage sauna in Ismayilli is a good example: 3D visuals and floor plans came first, then the house was built on site and finished inside to match the approved design. You can see it and other builds on our projects page.

Sauna house or spa complex?

If you are after a hotel-style zone with a pool, open terrace and several structures, look at the outdoor spa complex format. If you want everything compact, warm and under one roof, the cottage sauna is the better fit.

FAQ

How much does a sauna house with a lounge cost?

Roughly 10,000–50,000 AZN. The final figure depends on floor area, number of rooms, wet zones, timber and heater.

Does a sauna house need a pool?

No. Many clients are happy with a cold plunge tub or a shower. A pool is a great addition for contrast bathing and summer, but it’s optional.

How many people can a sauna house hold?

Anywhere from 4 to 20. Sizing is based on how many people will be in the sauna and in the lounge at the same time.

Why do I need a 3D design?

It lets you see and change the layout, interior and dimensions before construction starts, avoiding costly changes later.

Do you build outside Baku?

Yes. Barrel Sauna works across Azerbaijan, with projects in Ismayilli, Gabala, Gakh and other regions.
